NPES, the Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies is the only U.S. trade association (with nearly 450 member companies) specifically representing companies which manufacture or distribute equipment, systems, software, supplies and services used in printing, publishing and converting process from desktop design and image generation and processing to multiple output options and targeted dissemination systems.
The Association was founded as the National Printing Equipment Association in 1933. The 26 charter members included manufacturers of printing presses, bindery equipment, typesetting machinery and specialty equipment.
Today, the Association represents manufacturers, importers and distributors of equipment, supplies, systems and software used in every printing, publishing and converting process from design to distribution. Virtually all industry products and processes are represented by nearly 400 member companies, which range in size from under $1 million in annual sales revenue to more than $1 billion.
NPES makes available to its members a wide range of services including:
- Informational publications
- Statistical, safety, marketing and education data and programs
- Government affairs representation
- Safety and technical standards development coordination in the national and international arenas
- International trade assistance
The Association serves as secretariat to the following standards activities:
- the American National Standards Institute accredited B65Committee, charged with the development of safety standards for printing and finishing equipment;
- the ANSI accredited Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards (CGATS) to support and foster graphic arts standards activities and the develop technical standards where no applicable developer is available;
- the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to the International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 130, Graphic Technology, responsible for coordinating the U.S. position and participation in the international standards activities of the ISO’s TC 130.
Also housed at NPES are the offices of the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation, created by the owners of GASC in 1983 to serve as a means to channel a percentage of show revenues back into the industry. Since its founding, GAERF has distributed nearly $4 million to nearly 60 projects at 25 institutions.
Also located at NPES headquarters are Graphic Communications Council formerly the Education Council of the Graphic Arts Industry and the Graphic Communications Career Center, a coalition of associations, businesses and educational institutions devoted to promoting careers and training in graphic arts.
NPES is a co-owner, with the National Association for Printing
Leadership and Printing Industries of America, of the Graphic Arts Show Company, which is headquartered at the NPES offices. GASC events include the international PRINT® show, the annual national GRAPH EXPO® and CONVERTING EXPO®, regional events MIDWEST GRAPHICS®, GRAPHIC ARTS/THE CHARLOTTE SHOW® and THE GUTENBERG FESTIVALSM and the VUE/POINTSM Conference.
